Begin with the vegetables and herbs the household already purchases regularly, then add storage crops, calorie-producing staples, berries, fruit trees, and perennial foods as space and experience allow. Every pound of food grown, preserved, and stored at home reduces dependence on outside supply chains, even when the garden does not provide every meal.
The strongest garden is not necessarily the largest. It is the one the family can consistently plant, water, protect, harvest, preserve, and rebuild from season to season. Start with a manageable plan, improve the system each year, and allow practical experience to determine how far the household can move toward genuine food independence.
